The town of Shiozawa flourished some 300 years ago as a postal town, located along the Mikuni Kaido Highway (a transportation route connecting the Sea of Japan with Edo, the former capital). In an attempt to revive the town’s former history and culture, its present-day local residents spent a long time working together with staff from the prefectural promotion bureau, in the aim of discovering just what it was that made Shiozawa so special. The resulting creation was Bokushi Street – unique in its townscape and quaint in its atmosphere, as well as being first prize winner in the Urban Space division of the 2011 Urban Landscape Awards.
Moreover, in accordance with local tradition, charming praying mantis shaped curios and objects can be spotted scattered throughout the area, and quirky cafes and places to relax are easy to find.
