Located to the far west of Shimane Prefecture, the town of Tsuwano has managed to retain its old castle town feel. One of its chief highlights is the famous Taikodani Inari Shrine, which continues to attract worshippers from all across the country due to its association with answering prayers and fulfilling wishes. Perhaps the shrine’s hallmark is its striking tunnel of 1175 red ‘torii’ gates that make up the pathway towards the shrine.
During the New Year period, many people from the nearby Yamaguchi and Hiroshima prefectures come to visit the shrine for ‘hatsumode’ – the first shrine visit of the year. Hagi, in Yamaguchi Prefecture, is particularly close by, and it is common to visit shrines there as well as Taikodani Inari.
