Ise-Shunkei is the traditional lacquerware of Ise region. Its history dates back all the way to Muromachi period (14-16C). It is said that the carpenters who built shrines received the construction materials, which were raw woods, as payments. Subsequently they used them to carve out boxes, adding the finishing touch with the now famous Shunkei lacquer.
Ise-Shunkei uses solid slats of cypress wood and durable, tinted with materials such as Red Iron Oxide, then finished with Shunkei lacquer. It's characteristic is that the original, natural patterns of the wood are still visible through the lacquer finishing, creating a unique effect.
Ise-Shunkei is typically featured on household goods such as traditional nests of boxes and serving trays.
Ise Shunkei has been officially selected as the traditional crafts to represent Mie Prefecture. ""Ise-Shungei Design Kobo"" (orIse-Shungei Design studio)is the main factory of this art.
