In the Kanmon area around Shimonoseki and Kita-Kyushu (Moji), many people and goods had come and gone since old days as a key point of land and sea transportation connecting Honshu and Kyushu.
The Shimonoseki British Consulate was built with bricks in 1906 (39th year of the Meiji era), since this area was the international trading gateway. As a result, banks, trading companies and factories capitalized by the banks were built along the Kanmon Strait and modern architecture with the most advanced designs and technologies at that time lined up one after another.
In the Showa era (1926-1989), various transportation networks called "Strait Seven Roads" such as the world’s first undersea tunnel and the Kanmon bridge were completed. As a result, the Kanmon region became a passing point between Honshu and Kyushu, and retrospective buildings which moved Japan towards a modern country remained as if the time has stopped. When you cross the strait using a ferry or undersea tunnel, you can see nostalgic cityscapes as if you were getting into a movie scene.
In Shimonoseki city, "The former Shimonoseki British Consulate", "Former Akita Shokai Building", "Mutsurejima Lighthouse", "Shimonoseki Nabecho Post Office Building", etc. are Japan’s heritage.
