Approximately 300 metres long, the Oyama Sando in Tochigi prefecture (near JR Nishinasuno station on the Tohoku mainline), is a picturesque pathway lined with maple trees, leading towards the grave of Oyama Iwao – a former general of the Imperial Japanese Army.
From late November, the entire walkway suddenly becomes enveloped in a dazzling canopy of rich, red & gold autumn foliage – which, sadly, however, is all but gone by early December. To witness the shrine pathway at its most beautiful, be sure to plan your trip for late November.
