‘Hatsumode’ is the Japanese custom of visiting a shrine on the first day of the new year.
As a local deity of Yumoto Onsen (hot spring), as well as being recorded as a deity in one of the seven shrines entered in the registry of ancient Japanese regulations (‘engi-shiki’), Yumoto Onsen Shrine will be serving ‘amazake’ (sweet sake) on New Year’s Eve from 11:30pm, and ‘suiton’ (a special vegetable soup) from 8pm on the 1st of January.
