A purification ceremony is held in the early morning of the coldest day of the year where people purify their body and mind in Chijiwa River. About forty men and women in white clothes or white loincloth wish for health and home safety, and cleanse the impurity accumulated in one year with the flow of the river.
The coldest day is around January 20 every year in Japan, the average temperature at 6 o'clock in the morning is about 5 degrees. It was snowing some years. While people submerge in the cold water surrounded by bonfire, it lifts their spirits and even viewers’ spirits up. After the penance, the seven herbs porridge will be served and everyone looks cheerful. Anyone can participate by prior application.
