Created entirely by present-day master craftsmen, the concept of Korokan is to preserve and promote traditional Japanese architecture and construction techniques, with everything from its plasterwork down to the tools used relying on traditional construction methods. As a public hall, Korokan is also used as a place to promote civic culture, as well as international cultural exchange.

The building itself is 176 square metres, comprised of a single storey, and is constructed in the style of a traditional tea ceremony arbour, or ‘sukiya’. Its surroundings feature a Japanese rock garden, and from within the building the views of the pond and surrounding forest together create and impression of perfect harmony.
