Steeped in local folk religion, prayers for both good fortune and the prevention of various diseases are offered at the Daijiji Temple in Shima, Mie prefecture.
Due to its approx. 1,500 hydrangea that come into flower in June each year, the temple is also known in Japanese as ‘shima-no-ajisaidera’ – ‘the hydrangea temple of Shima’.
Around mid-February, heijin-sakura (cherry blossom) also comes into bloom, casting a gorgeous pink backdrop over the entire temple precincts.
