British poet Barton Martin visited Hikone castle once and wrote a poem "when you climb Hikone castle, children will see Lake Biwa, adults will see Japan and a great person will see the world".
The dungeon of Hikone Castle is designated as a national treasure along with Himeji Castle, Matsumoto Catsle, Inuyama Castle and Matsue Castle. It is a special historical site designated by the country registered as a World Heritage Tentative List.
Several towers called Yagura and Horses’ hutch remaining in the castle are designated as an important cultural property of the country. Construction work began in Keichō 9th year (1604), took about 20 years and was completed in Gen’na 8th year (1622).
"National Treasures, Hikone Castle 410th Year Festival" is held in 2017.
