A famous tourist attraction of Shiobara Onsen, ""Tote"" horse drawn carriages played an important role back in the early 20C as the main transport between the railway station and the spa towns.

The driver blows a special horn accompanying the rythm of the gait of the horses, this activity gave the name ""Tote"" to these carriages.

There used to be up to 26 carriages with 7 drivers at its peak around 50 years ago, but now only one carriage remains, and the service is seasonal.

It is one of the touristic symbol of Shiobara Onsen. Both the activity and the carriage means a lot to this place. Listening to the hooves of the hard working horse, enjoy the idyllic tour around the oncen villages. An experience well worth a try.
