With its avenue of cedar trees elegantly awaiting visitors, the Kotokuji Temple in Tochigi is steeped in the quiet mystery surrounding the Soto school of Zen Buddhism.
The temple is also the starting point of the famous ‘hyakudo Nenbutsumai’ dance – carried out in order to pray for family safety and abundant harvest, as well as being declared an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Japan.
The magnificent cedar trees rising above the temple seem to be looking down upon the ritual, making the temple precincts alone worth visiting purely for their ambience and long history.
