Surrounded by mountains on all sides, the Kofu Basin is a place of abundant natural beauty. Views of Mt. Fuji and the Southern Alps aside, the region is also home to the stunning Mitake Shosenkyo Gorge which, with its pink cherry blossom in spring, green verdrue in summer, deep red leaves in Autumn and snow-capped landscapes in winter, is worth seeing whatever the time of year.
The Shosenkyo Gorge is also known for its production of quartz – the surrounding area being known colloquially as ‘houseki no machi’ – ‘jewellery town’; home to its very own jewellery museum, where visitors can even experience producing their own crystals to take home with them.
Kofu is also the birthplace of Japan’s domestic wine industry, with a variety of wineries open to visitors, offering tours and tastings.
Fruit picking – especially for grapes, strawberries and pears, is widespread (the availability of each fruit depending on the season), and what’s more, the region is even home to many ‘onsen’ – natural hot springs, that can be bathed in in the typical Japanese style.
At just a 90 minute train journey from Toyko, or a two hour drive (1 hour from the Mt. Fuji area), Kofu is easily accessible from more touristic parts of Japan.
With such a huge variety of things to see and do, for all tastes, ages and abilities, Kofu really is an ideal destination for those wishing to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
