Tottori is the least populated prefecture in Japan. The prefecture covers a large area from East to West, with the Tottori airport in the East and the Yonago airport in the West. It's not convenient but you can feel happy
in a way that you can't feel in the city.
Also it faces the Sea of Japan(East Sea), and there are many ingredients that can only be enjoyed here, for example, Oya crab and Mosa shrimp. Sakaiminato is famous in Japan for its seafood, and Matsuba crab, rockfish and the Pacific bluefin tuna are all excellent.
The natural environment of Tottori is truly magnificent. Mt.Daisen is simply beautiful, and is said to be one of the 4 best-known mountains in Japan, and is the highest in the Chugoku region, and is even treated as a nationa park.
There still remain many historical towns in Tottori. Kurayoshi city is one of most beloved spots from those overseas, with its Akagawara buildings from the Edo and Meiji eras, and the Tami guesthouses which are renovated old houses near by.
Mingei(traditional craftsmanship) is thriving in Tottori. Artists and craftsmen of various crafts such as woodworking and pottery, blacksmithing, papermaking, are producing well-designed worldclass products with traditional skills.
There are many shops that sell Japanese style folk craft, but "COCOLOSTORE" in Kurayoshi is popular even with foreigners. It introduces you to the subject of Sanin, or being a part of the mountain, living with traditional skills in and with nature.
If you have the chance to visit Tottori we recommend you go to the Folk Crafts Shop TAKUMI, which is very popular among tourists and where you'll be able to experience traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
